Aurora Celestin: "A Light Burden" (Sermon for July 5, 2026)

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Matthew 11:29-30.
As Jesus was forming his community in ancient Palestine, his leadership contrasted greatly with the imperial leadership that oppressed his people. To be a leader offering ease and rest, gentleness and humility was radical. This was the marker of a servant leader.
As we celebrate the 250th birthday of this country, I am thinking about who we are as a collective and who we ought to strive to be as a world leader. What if we offered the world a Christlike gentleness and humility? What if we posed a light burden on the world instead of the heaviness of imperial might and control? What if?
I wish you all a peaceful Independence Day and look forward to exploring the model of Christ with you this Sunday.
Blessings,
Aurora
